DSCC mayor-elect Ishraque Hossain vows clean Eid-ul-Azha in Dhaka
NN Online:
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor-elect and BNP leader Ishraque Hossain has pledged to ensure a swift and efficient waste management operation during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, aiming to keep the city clean in the wake of the festival’s sacrificial rituals.
In a verified Facebook post on Friday morning, Ishraque declared himself the “people’s mayor”, emphasizing that his responsibilities go beyond formalities. “Taking the oath is merely a formality. As the people’s mayor, I bear the responsibility to ensure adequate waste management preparations before Eid,” he stated.
He also extended his support to both DSCC and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), promising to assist conservancy workers and the administration—particularly in the north—until a new mayor is elected. “We’ll aim to restore a comfortable environment within 16 hours of Eid day,” he added.
To expedite the cleanup efforts, Ishraque announced the formation of zonal monitoring teams, comprising former councillors and past election candidates, to oversee waste management in DSCC areas. He also expressed his willingness to join conservancy teams on the ground, ensuring firsthand oversight.
This proactive stance follows a High Court ruling on Thursday, which cleared the path for Ishraque to take his mayoral oath. Justices Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Debashish Roy Chowdhury rejected a writ petition that sought to prevent his swearing-in.
Ishraque was earlier declared the winner of the 2020 DSCC mayoral election by an election tribunal, defeating Awami League’s Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
