Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) evicted hawkers from footpaths on Friday, the weekly holiday. The hawkers protested the eviction drive.
Earlier, the DSCC had said that the hawkers could sit on the pavements to sell their goods full times in weekly vacation days on Friday and Saturday. They banned only on working days to sell their goods on the pavements.
Hawkers alleged that they sat in different pavements in Gulistan and adjoining areas in the morning on Friday. But suddenly the police rushed to them and started eviction drive.
“We have just started to sell our goods in the morning under the DSCC’s directives. DSCC said us to sit on pavements from morning on vacation days. But police evicted us,” Abul Hossain, one of the street vendors told journalists.
“We did not understand why police used such behave with us. The authority should give us certain place to sit,” said another hawker expressing his anxiety.
When contacted the on duty police personnel of Ramna Police Station told journalists that they could not say anything about the eviction drive. “You should ask the City Corporation in this regard,” they said.
DSCC has made a decision on January 11 in a meeting that hawkers will not be allowed to sit on pavements before evening in working days. The meeting also took decision that they could sit there in holidays.
