There has been a sudden increase in murders, attacks and gunfire incidents in Khulna. In the first 8 days of this month, 3 people have been killed. 3 more people have been injured in stabbings and shootings. The people of the city are becoming terrified by one terrorist act after another.
According to Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP), 31 murder cases have been registered in the city from September last year to Monday, August 4. In a year from September 2023 to August last year, there were 19.
The victim’s family and police said that on the night of August 1, Monowar Hossain Tagor was stabbed to death in the Sabujbagh area of the city. Even after five days, the police could not arrest the main accused.
On August 3, Alamin Hawladar, a ghera trader, was hacked to death in the North Banikpara area of Maheshwarpasha in the city. The miscreants slit his throat to ensure his death. In this incident, the deceased’s brother Awlad Hossain filed a case against unknown persons as the plaintiff. No one has been arrested in this case so far.
On August 5, at 8 pm, miscreants shot and hacked to death Sheikh Shahadat Hossain, the leader of the banned extremist organization Purba Bangla Communist Party (Janajuddha) in front of the city’s Sangeeta Cinema Hall. After serving almost 23 years in prison, he was released on bail on January 8. He had numerous cases against him, including multiple murders. After his release, he was living a normal life.
Investigators said that the morale of the police in Khulna, like the rest of the country, collapsed after the mass uprising. They have been inactive for a long time. Terrorists and drug dealers have taken advantage of this. Many have returned to the area after being released on bail and are involved in previous crimes. Emerging terrorists have joined them. Everyone has become reckless day by day.
