Opinions of Dhaka citizens are divided over providing personal information to the police for a ‘database’ of tenants they are preparing.
A section is apprehensive of the move viewing it as another ‘ploy’ to harass them. But another group thinks it is necessary for their own security and safety. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has recently given “registration forms” to house owners for collecting details, along with photograph, of their tenants.
Besides personal information like date of birth, passport number, the police have also sought details of tenants’ family members and employees, like household workers and car drivers. A Supreme Court lawyer, on Tuesday, served a legal notice against the move saying police have neither the legal authority nor the training to collect personal information from the people. But a Malibagh resident, MM Ferdous, has a different view.
“Police should have done this a long time ago. People with criminal background are afraid to provide their personal information to the authorities,” he said.
