BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas has claimed that a “drama” is unfolding behind the scenes concerning the ban on the Awami League, a party that played a key role in the country’s 1971 Liberation War.

Speaking at an event held at the National Press Club in Dhaka, Abbas criticized the authorities for allegedly allowing the National Citizen Party (NCP) to stage demonstrations in restricted areas designated by Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Referring to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, he said: “Sheikh Hasina used to stage such dramas to divert public attention from more important national issues.”

Abbas also alleged that an unpopular political party is trying to undermine the BNP while remaining silent on the Awami League’s ban. “Those questioning BNP’s position on the Awami League ban are enemies of the nation and its people,” he asserted.

Rejecting claims that the BNP is trying to rehabilitate Awami League leaders, Abbas said, “The idea that we want to shelter those who oppressed BNP activists over the past 17 years is baseless and fueled by jealousy.”

He further alleged that BNP members are being systematically removed from the administration and replaced by individuals aligned with the Awami League and Jamaat-e-Islami.
