Dr. Shawkat new president of Bangladesh Physical Society

Dr. Mohammad Shawkat Akbar, Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, has been elected as the 25th President of the Bangladesh Physical Society at the Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka, on May 11, 2024. He is elected for the term 2024-25. The Bangladesh Physical Society elects its president from among the renowned physicists of the country during the society’s annual general meeting. It is notable that internationally acclaimed nuclear scientist Dr. M A Wazed Mia served as the 13th President of the Bangladesh Physical Society during 1997-98.
Eminent nuclear scientist Dr. Akbar was born in 1966 in Kishoreganj district. He obtained his Bachelor’s (Honors) and Master’s degrees in Physics from Dhaka University. Later, he obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Hokkaido Institute of Technology, Japan.

The number of research articles published by him in national and international journals is more than 60, and he has presented over 130 research articles at national and international conferences.
Dr. Akbar started his career as a scientist at the BAEC in January 1993. In 2024, he assumed the position of Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. Additionally, he is serving as the Managing Director of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited. In his illustrious career spanning over 25 years, Dr. Akbar has made outstanding contributions in the fields of nuclear power, nuclear engineering, and project management. Apart from that, he is serving as a member of the Technical Group of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding Nuclear Power Infrastructure Development. Dr. Akbar skillfully managed the three projects related to the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant, Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, from 2009 to 2023.
