BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said political parties should be aware that fascists could not return because of their mistakes in any form.
“We must remember that due to our own mistakes, or any wrong political steps, we should never again fall under the oppression of fascists. In other words, we must not allow the fascists to return. We have to keep in mind that we are going through a very difficult time.
During this period, we must tread with utmost awareness and caution,” Mirza Fakhrul said these on Tuesday while addressing an extended meeting of the Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila and Ruhia Thana units of the BNP at the District Shilpakala Auditorium in Thakurgaon town.
Mirza Fakhrul further said, “A major transformation has taken place in Bangladesh. Because of this change, especially our party leaders and activists who have fought for democracy can now sleep peacefully at night.”
He added, “Over the past 15 years, we have endured much oppression and persecution under a regime of misrule. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the people of Thakurgaon, who have borne tremendous suffering during that period.
Many have faced numerous false cases, many have been imprisoned, and some were even convicted. Later, with the help of our lawyers, we managed to secure their release.
I have been working with you for a long time. Since my party first nominated me, I have been contesting elections-sometimes winning, sometimes losing. But I have never left you, and likewise, you have never abandoned the BNP.”
Mirza Fakhrul also said, “The upcoming election is extremely important for us. Through this election, we want to return to a democratic system. Our people want elections; they want to vote again after being deprived of that right for the past 16 years.
They want to choose their own representatives and form their own government. Through that parliament and government, they want to revive Bangladesh’s economy and build a prosperous, democratic nation.”
The extended meeting was presided over by district BNP president Mirza Faisal Amin and attended by district BNP general secretary Paigam Ali, municipal president Sharifkul Islam Sharif, Sadar Upazila president Abdul Hamid, general secretary Mahbub Hossain Tuhin, and other party leaders and activists.
