The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday sent a letter to the Chief Adviser’s Office seeking information about alleged corruption of Tk 21,000 crore in eight projects by ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members.
Earlier on December 17, the ACC decided to launch a probe into allegations that Sheikh Hasina, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and Rehana’s daughter Tulip Siddiq, a British lawmaker, embezzled Tk 80,000 crore from nine priority projects.
Of this amount, Tk 59,000 crore was allegedly embezzled from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, and Tk 21,000 crore embezzled from eight others.
ACC Deputy Director Akhtarul Islam confirmed the development to the media on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the ACC sources, the eight projects other than Rooppur where irregularities and corruption have been reported include the Mirsharai Economic Zone, Khurushkul Special Shelter Project, Ashrayan Project-2, Mirsharai BEPZA Economic Zone, water treatment plants and deep tube wells at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City, establishment of an Indian Economic Zone in Mirsharai, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City development project in Mirsharai, and two modern fire station projects in the same area.
The anti-graft body has also requested all relevant documents, including the project proposals, approved proposals, budget approvals, allocated budgets, fund disbursement details, expenditures as well as the latest status of the projects.
If any investigation reports on these projects exist, copies of those and a separate summary of the project timelines have also been requested by the commission.
