Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has been advised to undergo bypass surgery after an angiogram revealed serious blockages in three major heart vessels, doctors confirmed.
Shafiqur collapsed twice on July 19 during the party’s national rally at Suhrawardy Udyan and was immediately hospitalized in Dhaka. Though initially discharged after treatment, a follow-up angiogram on July 29 revealed the extent of his cardiac condition.
Medical professionals say bypass surgery is the most effective option, though stenting is also under consideration. A final decision on his treatment, including whether it will take place in Bangladesh or abroad, has not yet been made. However, Shafiqur has expressed a strong desire to be treated within the country.
Despite his health concerns, the Jamaat chief remains active. On July 28, he attended a high-profile meeting with the United Nations Fact-Finding Committee, where he delivered a speech alongside Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. His continued engagement has boosted morale within the party.
Zahidur Rahman, Deputy General Manager of Ibn Sina Trust, stated that while surgery has been advised, no definitive treatment decision has been finalized. “He remains under close medical observation and is currently stable,” Rahman added.
The news has stirred concern among Jamaat ranks, prompting prayer gatherings across the country as party leaders and activists unite in wishing their Ameer a swift recovery.
