Doctor deficit hampers treatment at SBMCH burn unit

Despite being a divisional city, the burn and plastic surgery unit of Barishal She E Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) running without sufficient trained doctors , nurses and staffs.
According to sources, Barishal SBMCH is one of the most reliable institutions of the health department in the entire southern region.
Although the hospital was established in 1968, the authorities are yet to open many important units.
As a result, common sufferers have to go to Dhaka for minor treatment.
It is known that three years ago, hundreds of passengers were injured after the fire at the Oviyan-10 launch in Jhalokathi.
Immediately after the incident, the Director of Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital initially started a 35-bed burn unit.
Although there was a specialist doctor in the burn unit at that time, he (Dr. Maruful Islam) moved to Dhaka last month due to transfer,now running without guardians.
A visit to the burn unit of the hospital shows that the ward does not have enough trained doctors, nurses andstaffs.The ward relies on intern doctors.
Even though the ward has air-conditioning, the patients are suffering due to its breakdown.Most of the electric fans don’t work.
In this regard, Deputy Director of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital Rezowanul Alam said that there are vacancies of doctors in several departments including the burn unit in the hospital.
A letter has been sent to the concerned department for appointing doctors to these posts.
Moreover, a ten-storey building has been proposed for the construction of Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit in Barishal SBMCH.
If it is passed, the fire patients of the southern region will no longer have to go to Dhaka, the deputy director of thehospital added. Body and face of 18-month oldAbdullah Al Araf of Charbishwash village of Galachipa upazila under Patuakhali district was burnt on September 10by carelessly falling hot water.
Arafwasafter being taken to the local Upazila Health Complex, was immediately referred to the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of BarishalSher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Shamim Hossain, father of Araf ,said Araf has been under treatment in the hospital for long days, but there is no specialist doctor in the burn unit of SBMCH.
Relative of another under treatment patient Russell said , the patients coming for treatment are at serious risk due to the littering and free entry of visitors, lack of cleaning staffs, doctors.
