Robbery, theft, mugging and begging on the streets – all see a rise as an early sign of famine in a society. No, at present there is hardly any shortfall of essential commodities in the market, but majority people now do not have enough money to buy those commodities. Still, the job or work opportunities for people have also greatly shrunk. It is no surprise that against this backdrop, different people will choose different ways for their survival even if these mean crimes.
Go to the market for shopping, especially in the kitchen markets, whenever you bring out your purse, one or two beggars approach you with spreading hands. No, it is not for us to turn down their hands with rude words at any time, because hungry stomachs can have little sense of dignity. Moreover, begging is not a crime. But robbery, theft or mugging with firearms or drawn-out daggers are crimes and it is immediately necessary to curb them. In an ideally civilized society, the justice system should see these crimes with compassion for the criminals, because it is the responsibility of a government to keep the people it governs well-fed.
While the law enforcers must contain robbery, theft and mugging, it is more important to catch the looters and launderers of public funds, a crime which is absolutely responsible for bringing this present economic crisis for which these crimes see a rise at present. But the bitter truth is there is no example before us when some laundered money is brought back or a corrupt politician or a bureaucrat is punished. Far from punishing the powerful criminals, the government is yet to become successful in containing corruption and capital flight even when a deep economic crisis is raging in the country.
Theft and corruption are rising in the country. The country’s economy has been on the verge of ruination for corruption in every sector. Do not ask government to stop theft or corruption because it itself is involved in it.
