A list of extortionists active in different consumer markets in the capital is being prepared and drives against them will begin within two or three days.
Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali, commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told it at a view-exchange meeting with the students, citizens, and representatives from the Ramna Model Police Station area at the Diploma Engineers Institution in Kakrail on Saturday.
He said: “No one will extort, and no one will be spared if they engage in extortion.”
Commissioner Sajjat Ali urged citizens to remain vigilant when navigating streets and ghats.
He said that evicting hawkers abruptly would be inhumane but warned that bribery involving hawkers would not be tolerated.
Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali also announced plans to crack down on extortion and ensure discipline in the city.
Issuing a stern warning against motorcyclists using sidewalks and excessive horn honking in traffic jams, he said: “Action will be taken soon against those who honk their horns repeatedly.”
