Dhaka Medical College (DMC) has been declared closed for an indefinite period starting Sunday (June 22). In an official notice signed by Principal Professor Dr. Md. Kamrul Alam, the authorities announced the suspension of all academic activities for MBBS students until further notice.
The decision was made during an emergency meeting of the college’s Academic Council held on Saturday, June 21. Students have been instructed to vacate their dormitories by 12:00 PM on Sunday.
However, students currently participating in the professional MBBS examinations, along with foreign students, will be exempted from the closure and allowed to remain on the campus.
According to sources within the institution, the move comes amid ongoing student protests demanding resolution of several issues, primarily related to housing and infrastructure.
The students have been staging demonstrations in recent days, pressing for five key demands.
These include: Immediate alternative accommodation for hostels declared uninhabitable ,Budget approval for the construction of new dormitories and academic buildings ,Ensuring transparency in project implementation through student representation.
Protesting students had earlier warned that they would suspend academic activities themselves if their demands were not met.
However, the administration preemptively announced the closure, citing the unrest as a key factor. College authorities have urged all concerned to remain calm and cooperate with the decision as efforts continue to address the students’ concerns.
