Police recovered the dissect body of a man from a plastic drum left near the main gate of the National Eidgah, adjacent to the High Court area in Dhaka, on Thursday evening.
Confirming the incident, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Ramna Division) Md Masud Alam said, “One of the drums contained the body, cut into multiple pieces, while the other was filled with rice.”
He added that police were reviewing nearby CCTV footage to gather more information about the case.
Eyewitnesses reported that around 2pm, a man arrived in a van carrying four plastic drums and left two of them at the spot before leaving the area.
About four hours later, a foul odor began spreading from the drums, prompting a passerby to raise an alarm.
Police officers stationed at the High Court gate rushed to the scene and opened the drums.
Initially, they saw rice inside, but upon removing it, they discovered dismembered body parts wrapped in polythene bags.
Shahbagh Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mainul Islam Khan said the body was recovered around 6pm.
Later, at approximately 7:15pm, the CID’s Crime Scene Unit arrived and confirmed the victim’s identity through fingerprint analysis.
The deceased was identified as Md Ashraful Haque, 43, a resident of Badarganj upazila in Rangpur.
A CID Crime Scene Unit member told the media that the body had been severed into at least 26 pieces.
