A discussion on ‘July Uprising 2024 and the Role of Media in Establishing Democracy’ was held in Rangpur at the initiative of the Department of Information. Senior Deputy Chief Information Officer of the Department of Information M. Javed Iqbal was present as the chief guest in the discussion held at the conference room of the Rangpur District Commissioner on Friday. Additional District Commissioner (General) of Rangpur Md. Ramiz Alam presided over the program.
In his speech as the chief guest at the program, the Senior Deputy Chief Information Officer said that the steps of the media in the July 2024 uprising were immense. The media played an active role in reaching information to the people at that time, forming public opinion and increasing public support for the movement. He told the journalists that such a journalism field must be created in the country where the accountability of all governments is ensured. Regarding PID’s steps in the July Uprising, he said that the Information Department has created a photo album of the bloody July Uprising on the PID website to commemorate the July Uprising. Soft copies of various newspapers from June 5 to August 7 have been stored there.
Which will be useful for journalists’ research. Regarding the establishment of democracy, he said that democracy ensures the fundamental rights of the people. People have struggled for democracy at different times. But it has not been possible to fully establish the rights of the people. Media workers must play a leading role in establishing democracy. For this, he called on media workers to play their role from their respective positions in establishing democracy.
In his speech as the chairman, the Additional District Commissioner said that the role of free and creative media in building society and the state is undeniable. This media accelerated the anti-discrimination movement to eliminate discrimination from society. For this, he called on everyone to forget all differences and work together for the development of the media.
Taking part in the open discussion, journalists said that new rumors are constantly being spread on social media. For this, the rumor prevention cell needs to be strengthened further. Requested to increase the number of accreditation cards for journalists, including reducing the deadline for providing information under the Right to Information Act and the deadline for resolving appeals.
At the beginning of the program, Deputy Chief Information Officer of the Department of Information Mohammad Ali Sarkar presented the keynote speech.

Farhad Ahmed, Deputy Chief Information Officer of the Department of Information NasreenJahanLipi, Deputy Chief Information Officer Mohammad KamruzzamanBhuiyan, Deputy Chief Information Officer HasinaAkhter, Information Officer Sanjida Amin, Information Officer Afsana Mimi and journalists from various media of Rangpur Division were present at the program.
