The Senior Special Judge Court of Dhaka yesterday sent Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (Prisons) of Sylhet Partha Gopal Banik to the jail over the seizure of Tk eight million graft money from his residence in Bhuter Gali area the capital city.
Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Kayes passed the orders on Monday after hearing.
However, his lawyers Rahman Howlader, Masud Ahmmed Talukder, Khorshed Talukder, Khorshed Alam, Gazi Shah Alam and Faruk Ahmed claimed that their client earned Tk eight million from his legal income source. Of those, Tk three million was given by his mother in law and rest Tk five million is from the earning of his wife Dr Runa Mollick and his lifetime deposit.
In the circumstances, the lawyers reportedly filed the petition in the court seeking their client’s bail.
The lawyer of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) opposed the bail, saying as he is a public servant, it is necessary to know from him how and from where so much money came in his house.
A petition will be filed to put Partha on remand at any time and for that the ACC urged the court to send him to the jail. Later, the court, after hearing both sides, sent him to the jail rejecting his bail plea.
Earlier on Sunday, the ACC detained Partha Gopal Banik, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (Prisons) of Sylhet with Tk eight million from his Bhuter Gali residence in the capital city.

Earlier in the day, Partha Gopal Banik was quizzed by an ACC team led by their Director Mohamamd Yusuf at the Segunbagicha office of the ACC for four hours from 10 am. He was summoned there on Sunday and interrogated over graft allegations.
Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, Public Relations Officer of ACC, told newsmen that being tipped off that he kept Tk eight million graft-money in his house, the team of ACC raided his residence around 4:3 pm and recovered the amount.
Prior to Sylhet, Partha Gopal Banik discharged his duties at Chattogram Central Jail.
