Diarrhea has broken out in all the 4 Unions of Sharankhola, the smallest Upazila situated on the coastal area in Bagerhat district in a large scale, according to reports received here. Every day on average some 40 diarrhea patients are being admitted to the Upazila Health Complex for taking treatment from the different places of the Upazila. On the other hand, on average some 50 to 60 patients are appearing at the Health Complex as the outdoor and emergency sections of the Hospital for taking their treatment. For want of sufficient number of beds in the Hospital patients are now laying on the corridor and floor of the same. Besides this, a good number of diarrhea patients are taking treatment from the village physicians, according to the reports received here. Out of them whose condition becomes precarious are also appearing at the Health Complex for taking treatment as indoor patients. The reasons behind the sudden outbreak of diarrhea at this time in the Upazila are ascertained by the physicians as the sudden increase of the temperature, taking of ‘Iftari’ and ‘Sehri’ prepared with adulated oil and ingredients and for want of pure drinking water.
On Thursday (March 20) when some local newsmen visited the Health Complex found as many as 38 diarrhea patients were admitted to the Complex without its capacity. The women wards are full of patients more than the capacity with women patients and side by side the male patients. Rahila Begum (50) hails from Uttar Tafalbari village and Manbor Begum (55) hails from Nalbunia village who are admitted to the Health Complex on Wednesday as diarrhea patients. They told, in the evening of Tuesday we broke our fasting with the self prepared Iftari and at the following night we have been suffering from continuous vomiting and loose motion.
Reba Rani Debnath, Nursing Supervisor of the Health Complex told, during the corresponding period in the past years only a few diarrhea patients were used to be admitted to the Health Complex. But this year the picture is quite different. Now we are in deep water to cope with the situation as the numbers of diarrhea patients are more than what is necessary.
On the other hand, the pressure of the normal patients is as before. She added for want of beds the patients are now laying on the floor and the corridor of the Health Complex.
Biplob Sadhak, physician of Emergency Department of the Health Complex told, the pressure of diarrhea patients is on the increase mainly afternoon and most of the patients are admitted to the Health Complex in precarious condition. He added, in the past so pressure of the diarrhea patients was not found.
Dr. Ashfaq Hossain, RMO (Residential Medical Officer) of the Health Complex told, every day some 300 to 400 patients suffering from various diseases come to the Health Complex for taking treatment and out of them on average100 are diarrhea patients. But in the past years so many diarrhea patients were not found. According to him, taking the food prepared with adulterated oil and drinking saline and impure drinking water during the holy month of Ramadan mainly the elderly people are being attacked with diarrhea, The patients who are given treatment are also being advised to take unadulterated food and drink pure drinking water. The RMO added, the quantity of medicines and saltines stored in the Health Complex can be supplied to the patients for only one week. So, if the medicines and saltines are not supplied to the Health Complex from concerned authorities in time it will be very difficult to give treatment to the patients.
