Bangladesh has officially welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia after over four days of deadly cross-border clashes that left at least 36 people dead and displaced hundreds along both sides of the contested frontier.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on
Tuesday, Bangladesh expressed appreciation for the unconditional ceasefire reached by the two Southeast Asian neighbors.

The statement commended the role of Malaysia, current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), for its effective mediation at the highest political level.

Bangladesh also acknowledged the contributions of other friendly nations that supported the truce process.

The Foreign Ministry further stated, “Bangladesh remains hopeful that both Thailand and Cambodia will continue resolving their outstanding border demarcation issues through dialogue and diplomacy.

We encourage both parties to uphold peace and stability in the affected frontier areas and begin early recovery efforts to restore livelihoods.”

The recent flare-up marks one of the most serious escalations in a century-old border dispute rooted in colonial-era territorial demarcations.
The conflict was reignited last Thursday when both sides accused each other of encroachment and opened fire across contested positions along the Dangrek mountain range.

Though skirmishes between Thailand and Cambodia have occurred periodically-most notably around the disputed Preah Vihear temple-the latest fighting involved the use of heavy artillery and drone surveillance, raising regional concerns.

Observers believe that underlying tensions over nationalist sentiments, resource control, and political posturing contributed to the rapid escalation.
The clashes prompted thousands to flee from border towns as homes, schools, and markets were caught in the crossfire.

Bangladesh’s call for diplomatic resolution aligns with the wider international appeal for restraint and long-term peace building in the region.
