BSS, Dhaka :
There is no scarcity of water in the capital now as Dhaka WASA is producing surplus water, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said.
Replying to a question from Bangladesh Nationalist Front
(BNF) lawmaker SM Abul Kalam Azad on Thursday, the LGRD minister said Dhaka WASA has achieved the capacity of producing 242 crore liter water daily against the demand for 225 crore liter.
Responding to another question from treasury bench member M Abdul Latif, Syed Ashraful Islam admitted that there are illegal water connections in different slums in the capital. He, however, said Dhaka WASA has been working ceaselessly with the assistance of different NGOs to bring these illegal connections under the legal network.
“Dhaka WASA is determined to bring all illegal water connections under legal network by December 2015,” he asserted and told the House that there is a regular supervision to check illegal water connections in the capital.
He said Dhaka WASA has been conducting regular drives through mobile courts to check illegal water connections. “The connections are snapped immediately with realizing fines if illegal water connections are found,” he added. The LGRD minister said scopes for legalizing the connections with fines are given to the clients some times.
In this case, he said, actions are taken against WASA employees if any involvement to this end found.
