Staff Reporter :

Bangladesh remains committed to ensuring safe and regular migration but faces ongoing challenges as an increasing number of its citizens are reported as illegal or undocumented migrants.

Such irregular migration not only tarnishes the country’s international reputation but also imposes financial burdens when individuals are deported at the government’s expense.

To address this issue, the Foreign Ministry has sought the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to facilitate the safe and regular migration of skilled workers.
Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain made this request during a meeting with the newly appointed Chief of Mission of IOM Bangladesh, Lance Bonneau, who presented his credentials on Wednesday.

Highlighting the complexities of migration, the adviser stressed the importance of creating a comprehensive database for jobseekers and leveraging digital tools to enhance skills development.

Welcoming the new IOM chief to Bangladesh, Touhid Hossain assured him of the ministry’s full support and cooperation in advancing IOM’s initiatives. Lance Bonneau, in turn, reiterated that promoting safe and regular migration remains a key priority for IOM.
