In a bid to bolster economic, cultural, and tourism cooperation, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan underscored the need for establishing direct air connectivity during a meeting in Tashkent on Monday.
The discussion was led by Bangladesh Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Dr. Mohammad Monirul Islam, and Uzbekistan Airways Chairman, Shukhrat Shavkatovich.
During the meeting, Shavkatovich informed the Bangladesh envoy about plans to launch flight operations on the Tashkent-Dhaka-Tashkent route. He sought the ambassador’s cooperation in addressing the existing challenges to initiating the direct flights.
Referring to the interest of Bangladeshis in visiting the historically and religiously significant sites in Uzbekistan, Ambassador Islam stated that direct flight operations would enhance the friendship between the people of the two countries. Both parties expressed their commitment to continuing their efforts and communication regarding the direct flight operation.
Uzbekistan Airways Deputy Chairman and senior officials were also present at the meeting.
Earlier, on February 27, 2024, the Bangladesh Embassy in Tashkent and the Foreign Ministry of Uzbekistan signed a roadmap to increase trade and investment relations and establish direct air connectivity between Dhaka and Tashkent.
Meanwhile, Bangladeshi manpower exporters have repeatedly suggested establishing direct air connectivity to the Central Asian country, highlighting the region’s potential as a destination for migrant workers.
