Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin on Sunday emphasized the need for global cooperation to address shared challenges in the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM).
He highlighted the importance of ensuring safe and regular migration during his speech at the National Consultation for the Regional Review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM), held at Hotel InterContinental in the capital, according to a press release from the foreign ministry.
The event was organized by the Bangladesh Migration Compact Taskforce, with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Bangladesh, under the joint leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
The consultation served as a platform to assess Bangladesh’s progress as a GCM Champion Country in the implementation of the Compact.
The foreign secretary remarked, “Human mobility is central to the global transformations of today and can serve as a powerful driver in achieving the goals of zero poverty and zero unemployment, aligning with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s vision of the Three Zeroes.”
Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary Md Ruhul Amin stated, “Through collaborative efforts, Bangladesh seeks to refine strategies
to tackle challenges, improve the rights and well-being of migrants, and align with global best practices for sustainable development.”
IOM Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Iori Kato, noted that the GCM continues to be a crucial framework for migration governance.
He emphasized its role in addressing emerging challenges such as climate change and post-pandemic recovery, while also contributing to the achievement of the sustainable development goals.
