Bangladesh has officially signed the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Labour Centre Statute, marking a significant step toward enhancing labour rights and welfare in the country.

The signing ceremony took place on April 13 at the OIC headquarters in Jeddah, where Brigadier General (Rtd.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain, Adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, signed the Statute on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh.

Dr. Sakhawat Hussain was warmly welcomed by Dr. Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo, OIC Assistant Secretary General (ASG) for Economic Affairs. During their discussion, both sides highlighted the importance of the Statute in strengthening labour protections and fostering international cooperation on workforce issues.

The adviser noted Bangladesh’s commitment to international labour standards, emphasizing that the country is a signatory to all core conventions and protocols of the International Labour Organization (ILO). He also outlined government initiatives to improve factory safety, health, minimum wage, and other worker welfare measures.

Dr. Sengendo congratulated Bangladesh on the signing and expressed appreciation for its proactive efforts in labour rights advancement. Both parties agreed on the need for deeper collaboration in trade, investment, and labour-related sectors.
