Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has sought Sri Lanka’s support for bringing back siphoned money.

Dr. Yunus sought this support while meeting with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harinia Amarasuriya on Friday on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.

During their discussion, the two leaders explored issues of mutual interest and expressed their commitment to enhancing trade and cooperation between their respective nations.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya highlighted Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to recover misappropriated funds, noting that the country’s parliament had recently passed a new law to accelerate the recovery process.

In response, Chief Adviser Yunus sought Sri Lanka’s support for the Bangladesh Interim Government’s initiatives to retrieve billions of dollars siphoned abroad.

The discussion also touched on various aspects of the July uprising, with both leaders underscoring the significance of fostering stronger people-to-people ties between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Professor Yunus elaborated on the reform agenda of the Bangladesh Interim Government and outlined his administration’s plan to hold elections between December and June of the following year.

The meeting was also attended by Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed, and Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin.
