City Desk :
Dhaka ranked most polluted city Bangladesh’s capital city has topped the list of cities with the most polluted air, with “very unhealthy” air quality.
Dhaka’s Air Quality Index (AQI) score was 230 on Tuesday (January 14) at 7.35am.
India’s Delhi ranks second with an AQI score of 208 and Kolkata is third with a score of 196. Switzerland-based air quality monitoring technology firm IQ Air has released the list.
An AQI score of 100 to 200 is considered ‘unhealthy’, especially for sensitive groups.
Similarly, an AQI score of 201 to 300 is considered an emergency with health warnings.
In this situation, children, the elderly, and sick patients are urged to limit their indoor and outdoor activities.
An AQI between 301 and 400, on the other hand, is considered ‘hazardous’, posing serious health risks to residents.
The AQI index, based on daily air quality, provides information on how clean or polluted the air in a particular city is and what health risks it may pose to residents.
Dhaka has been suffering from air pollution for a long time. Its air quality normally deteriorates during the winter and marginally improves during the monsoon season.
Meanwhile, the Department of Environment (DoE) asked the city dwellers to wear face mask when they go outside as city’s air quality index (AQI) already has deteriorated and it has reached to very unhealthy position.
