Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to closer maritime cooperation with small island nations, highlighting shared priorities on economic growth, security, and climate resilience.
A special programme was hosted at the Bangladesh High Commission in London by Abida Islam, Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK and Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The event brought together High Commissioners and Ambassadors from the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) group.
Speaking at the gathering, Abida Islam stressed Bangladesh’s identity as a maritime nation and underscored the need for collective action to tackle global maritime and climate-related challenges.

She noted that Bangladesh is eager to deepen collaboration with SIDS countries through the IMO to advance common goals.
The discussions provided a platform to strengthen partnerships and explore new avenues of cooperation.

Participants praised Bangladesh’s active role in championing sustainable maritime governance and recognised its leadership in both regional and global maritime affairs.
Initiatives like this, observers said, demonstrate Bangladesh’s expanding role in international maritime diplomacy and its dedication to building fair and inclusive cooperation among developing and climate-vulnerable nations.
