Bangladesh and Maldives are keen to deepen bilateral cooperation in multifaceted fields including mutual cooperation in decentralisation, local governance and public sector development.
The remarks came while the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives, Dr Md Nazmul Islam, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works of the Maldives, Adam Shareef Umar in Male on Friday, said a press release.
The meeting, held in a spirit of mutual friendship, focused on advancing collaboration between the two countries in areas such as local governance, institutional capacity building, and community-based development.
Both sides underlined their shared goal of promoting inclusive and sustainable growth through stronger institutional partnerships.
Minister Adam Shareef Umar described Bangladesh as a reliable development partner and expressed his government’s willingness to learn from Bangladesh’s extensive experience in community-led initiatives, microfinance, and microcredit schemes that have driven rural empowerment and poverty reduction.
He also commended the Bangladeshi expatriate community for their valuable contribution to the Maldives’ economy, particularly in the infrastructure and service sectors.
Dr Nazmul Islam thanked the Maldives Government for its continued support to Bangladeshi nationals living in the country and reaffirmed Dhaka’s readiness to share expertise and extend technical assistance in local governance, human resource development, and skill enhancement.
Both sides agreed to pursue the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the concerned ministries and agencies to formalise cooperation and ensure long-term institutional engagement.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the two nations’ commitment to further strengthen their partnership, guided by shared priorities in local empowerment, sustainable development, and regional cooperation.
