EXISTENTIAL THREAT FOR BANGLADESH: Dhaka grapples with alarming air pollution levels

Dhaka’s air has been affecting the physical and mental health of people living in the capital. Dhaka has become the most polluted city of the country compared to rest others.
Experts claim that air is being polluted in Dhaka due to persistent traffic, major construction works and brick kilns.
Heath Experts told The New Nation that numerous harmful health effects, such as type 2 diabetes, lower respiratory infections, pulmonary disorders, ischemic heart diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, may be exacerbated by breathing polluted air.
He said, long-term exposure to air pollution can progressively cause lung function and increase the risk of lung cancer and chronic heart disease.
Assistant Surgeon of Mehendiganj Upazila Helath Complex Dr Kasedul Islam Nayon told The New Nation that long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. It can contribute to the development of various ailments such as heart attacks, strokes, and hypertension. He said, older people often have a higher likelihood of having cardiovascular issues, making them more susceptible to the adverse effects of air pollution.
Environmental scientists revealed that in 2023, Dhaka, the main city of Bangladesh, experienced its worst polluted year in the previous eight years. Even though there was a minor decrease in pollution at the start of this year, Dhaka remained at the top seven days out of the first thirteen.
Professor Dr ASM Maqsood Kamal, an environmental and climate scientist, pointed out the importance of aligning development projects with environmental considerations.
He highlighted the necessity of organizations taking proactive steps to reduce air pollution and the importance of putting agreements into place that guarantee the advancement of environmental preservation and growth concurrently.
