The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially named a new university integrating seven government colleges in Dhaka. It will be called “Dhaka Central University,” aiming to enhance higher education management in the capital.

The decision was made on Sunday during a meeting at the UGC building in the city’s Agargaon. The meeting included a 32-member delegation of students who participated in discussions on the matter.

After the meeting, UGC Secretary Fakhrul Islam confirmed the matter to the media saying, “The name ‘Dhaka Central University’ will now be sent to the Ministry of Education, and from there, it will go to the Advisory Council.

Following approval from the council and with the president’s consent, an ordinance will be issued to officially establish the university, he said.

The seven colleges are Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, Government Titumir College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, and Government Bangla College.

The seven colleges, which were affiliated with Dhaka University (DU) on February 17, 2017, serve approximately 2,00,000 students and have over 1,000 teachers. Each session, they admit around 21,500 new students. However, the affiliation with DU was discontinued in January this year after weeks of student protests demanding administrative changes.
