The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday upheld a High Court order that last year granted ad-interim bail to Sonia Akhter Smriti, founder President of Rajbari Blood Donors and a member of the district Mohila Dal, in a case filed on charge of making derogatory remark on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Facebook post.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order after dismissing an appeal filed by the state challenging the HC bail order.
Sonia will get released from jail following the apex court order if she is not arrested in any other case.
On October 31 last year, the HC bench of Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Shahed Nuruddin granted ad-interim bail to Sonia following a petition filed by her seeking bail in the case.
Later on, the SC Chamber Judge stayed the HC order of bail and sent the state’s petition to its full bench for hearing of the matter.
Senior lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali and Barristers Kayser Kamal and Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared for Sonia, while Additional Attorney General Sk Md Morshed represented the state during the hearing on Sunday.
