Dengue fatalities hit again with more deaths

Bangladesh has reported two more dengue deaths in the past 24 hours, raising the tally of deaths to more than 200 this year.

This marks the fourth-highest annual death toll from dengue. In previous years, 179 people died in 2019, 105 in 2021, 281 in 2022, 1,705 in 2023 and 575 in 2024.

The health directorate bulletin on Wednesday said the latest victims were undergoing treatment at hospitals in Dhaka South and Dhaka North City Corporation, reports bdnews24.com.
Over the past 24 hours, 490 new patients were admitted to hospitals with dengue across the country, raising the total number of hospitalisations this year to 47,832.

September recorded the highest hospitalisation rates with 15,866 patients.
This follows the earlier admission of 10,684 patients in July, 10,496 in August, 5,951 in June, 1,161 in January, 1,773 in May, 701 in April, 374 in February and 336 in March. October has seen 490 hospitalisations.

The fatalities in September, reaching 76 deaths, surpassed July’s death toll of 41. The earlier months recorded fewer deaths, with 10 in January, three in February, seven in April, three in May, 19 in June, and 39 in August. No deaths were reported in March.

The latest DGHS bulletin also indicated that 142 of the newly admitted patients are from Dhaka’s two city corporations.

Other regions reporting hospital admissions include Dhaka Division (105), Mymensingh (28), Chattogram (64), Rangpur (13), and Barishal (138).

As many as 2,359 dengue patients are receiving treatment in various hospitals across the country. Among them, 808 are in hospitals within Dhaka, while 1,551 are receiving care outside the capital.

The health directorate has been tracking dengue cases and fatalities since 2000. In 2023, the country saw its highest number of dengue hospital admissions- 321,179 along with a record 1,705 deaths.
