Dengue hospitalisations in Bangladesh have surged to 94,314 this year, with 629 new patients admitted in the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).The death toll from the mosquito-borne disease now stands at 509, as five more fatalities were reported during the same period.In Dhaka alone, 225 new patients were hospitalised until Wednesday morning. Across the divisions, 132 new cases were recorded in Dhaka Division (excluding the metropolitan area), followed by 75 in Khulna, 61 in Chattogram, 55 in Barishal, 34 in Rajshahi, 22 in Mymensingh, 16 in Rangpur, and nine in Sylhet.Currently, 2,431 patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals nationwide, with 973 in Dhaka and 1,458 in other regions.Bangladesh has faced recurrent dengue outbreaks since the DGHS began maintaining records in 2000.
The year 2023 marked the highest recorded cases, with 321,179 hospitalisations and 1,705 deaths.Public health authorities continue to stress the importance of preventive measures, including eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, to combat the spread of the Aedes mosquito-borne illness.
