Mosquito-borne dengue fever has claimed five more lives in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday morning, raising the total number of fatalities from the disease in Bangladesh to 102 this year.

During this period, 534 additional patients were admitted to hospitals with the viral fever, according to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Of those hospitalised, 78 patients were admitted to hospitals under the Dhaka North City Corporation, while 121 were admitted in the Dhaka South City Corporation area.
Currently, 1,664 dengue patients are receiving treatment in various hospitals across the country. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 16,819 dengue cases have been reported.

Last year was the deadliest on record for dengue in Bangladesh, with 1,705 people losing their lives to the disease. The DGHS recorded a staggering 321,179 dengue cases in 2023, with 318,749 recoveries.

Experts have attributed the rapid spread of dengue to the inadequate mosquito control efforts by city corporations. They also noted that intermittent rainfall has created more favourable conditions for the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, the primary carriers of the virus.
