Dengue claims 6 lives in a day

The dengue outbreak in Bangladesh is intensifying as six more people lost their lives and 647 others were admitted to hospitals nationwide in the 24 hours until Thursday morning.

With the fresh casualties, the official death toll from the mosquito-borne disease has climbed to 167 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the latest victims, two were from Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), two from Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), one from Barishal division, and one from Chattogram division.

During this time, 647 new dengue patients required hospitalisation, pushing the cumulative number of cases to 38,527 in 2025.

DGHS data showed the new cases were distributed as follows: 108 in Barishal division (outside city areas), 96 in Chattogram division (outside city areas), 102 in Dhaka division (outside city areas), 113 in DNCC, 128 in DSCC, 25 in Mymensingh division (outside city areas), 37 in Khulna division (outside city areas), and 38 in Rajshahi division (outside city areas).

Currently, 717 patients are under treatment in Dhaka, while 2,042 in total are being treated across hospitals countrywide.

The report further noted that men accounted for 62.6 percent of cases, while women made up 37.4 percent.

Last year, the virus claimed 575 lives. In the same period, DGHS documented 101,214 dengue infections, with 100,040 recoveries.
