Dengue claims 3 more lives, 583 hospitalised in 24hrs

The mosquito borne fever dengue claims three more lives in 24 hours till Thursday morning, raising the number of fatalities in the country to 199 this year.

Besides, 583 more patients were hospitalised with viral fever during the period, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) data showed it.

Among them, 130 dengue patients were admitted in hospital under Dhaka North City Corporation while 116 were hospitalised in Dhaka South City Corporation.

Some 3,495 patients are receiving treatment in different hospitals across the country.
A total of 40,405 dengue cases have been reported since January 1, 2024.

Last year, 1,705 people lost their lives due to dengue, making it the deadliest year on record, with 321,179 cases recorded.

Experts said, several factors that exacerbated the outbreak include high urban population density, climate change impacts more specifically intermittent rainfall, rapid urbanisation without adequate planning, insufficient mosquito control measures, and increased travel. They urged more cautionary measures including effective mosquito eliminating drives in urban areas.
