The US Ambassador to Bangladesh struck the right cord the other day when he said that his country does not care who wins the next parliamentary election in Bangladesh if it is a free and fair one. What is more important is that good governance is possible only under checks and balances under democracy. In a democracy there is less corruption. Because of democracy, transfer of power is peaceful. Ambassador Peter Haas said this while he was holding a meeting with the Editors’ Council, a forum of newspaper editors in Bangladesh.
It is the dictatorship that believes in gun power and oppression of people. Dictators spend comparatively more money in buying weapons. They are also war mongers because they are careless for the welfare of the general people. They want to be powerful in the arms race and please the arms dealers. Big powers, as big arms sellers, also look the other way and help dictatorships and ignore human rights violations. Against extremism, the USA and other big democracies must try to help spread of democracy against rising autocracies. As its fruit, the world peace will be safer to protect.
The politics of secret killings and forced disappearances are common in dictatorships. So to condemn secret killings and human rights violations is no real help if dictatorships are tolerated.
It is our firm view that fighting Russia and China as expansionists and human rights violators, hope is little for changing their system. Their system is attractive to dictators.
Free world countries take seriously free election as the basis of legitimacy of a government. Stealing free election is violation of the UN Charter.
