Bagerhat Correspondent :

The initial proposal to reduce one of the four constituencies in Bagerhat district in the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections has created intense anger among the general public, students, teachers, intellectuals, conscious citizens and political figures.

In continuation of this, Bagerhat district BNP, Jubo Dal, Jamaat Islami, Jatiya Nagorik Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Khelafate Majlis and almost every political party in the district participated in protest marches and meetings. The protest march started from Dashani intersection in Bagerhat at 11 am on Saturday and ended with a road meeting in front of D C’s Court.

The speakers at the road show strongly protested the Election Commission’s proposal and demanded the immediate restoration of the four constituencies in Bagerhat. Otherwise, the speakers warned of more intense agitation ahead.

In this regard, Bagerhat Women’s College Principal (Retd) Md. Shah Alam Faraji told, I find it logical to protest the Election Commission’s proposal. Bagerhat is a first-tier district in the country in terms of area. 4 seats was a correct arrangement here.

But I do not understand why this decision was suddenly made. He further addedd, reducing seats only on the basis of population is not reasonable in any way. Since Bagerhat is a neglected town and there are few job opportunities, the people of Bagerhat are constantly moving elsewhere for livelihood.

As a result, the population here is decreasing day by day. However, if seats are reduced for this reason, then this district will be neglected even more and the population will decrease further. He asked, will the government reduce seats again then? So I think this is an unreasonable proposal.

Abul Kalam, a businessman from Bagerhat district town said, the distance from Morelganj-Sharankhola to Mongla makes it very difficult for one person to develop this vast area. The Election Commission should back down from this decision.
