The flood situation in Sherpur district has deteriorated due to heavy rainfall, claiming the lives of seven people and new areas are being flooded as the river water levels continue to rise.
The floods hit five upazilas- Sherpur sadar, Nalitabari, Jhenaigati, Nakla and Sreebordi-affecting 200 villages in 28 unions and around 1,50,000 people are stranded.
Rescue operations were ongoing, with the army joining local volunteers and the fire service to evacuate those stranded.
Nakla Police Station Officer-In-Charge Habibur Rahman said one person died in Nakla on Saturday night. Besides, five people died in Nalitabari upazila and one in Jhenaigati.
Deputy District Commissioner Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman said, “The water of several rivers in the district is flowing above the danger levels. Local administrations are on alert. We are working to rescue the victims and deliver dry food.”
