Due to the financial crisis, the workers in the tea gardens of Sylhet were living a miserable life without receiving salaries and rations for several months. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sylhet Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad has stood by them in this critical situation.
With his dedicated efforts, cash and rice were distributed among 1,400 workers of 4 tea gardens in Sadar Upazila in Sylhet on Friday (March 28) afternoon.
It is learned that the workers of Burjan, Kalagul, Cheragang and Factory tea gardens in Sadar Upazila were living an inhumane life without receiving salaries and rations for 15 to 17 weeks. When the matter came to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner, he immediately took up the distribution of 7 lakh taka in cash and 14 metric tons of rice among the tea workers.
Sadar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Ms. Khoshnur Rubaiyat, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Mahbubul Islam, Metropolitan AC Land Md. Alim Ullah Khan, Senior Assistant Commissioner of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Marina Debnath, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Shirshendu Purkayastha, Khadimnagar Union Chairman Dilwar Hossain and others.
The tea workers, who were excited to receive the relief aid, expressed their gratitude to the district administration and said, “Our DC sir has given rice and teka. We are all very happy in the garden.”
UNO Ms. Khoshnur Rubaiyat said that this assistance has been given to each worker in the form of 500 taka and 10 kg of rice.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner is playing a leading role with great sincerity in resolving the existing crisis of tea workers and the tea industry. Earlier, during the period when wages and rations were suspended in Lakkatura, Daldali, and Kewachhara tea gardens, the Deputy Commissioner provided 30 kg of rice, a total of 36 metric tons of rice and food items worth Tk 6 lakh to each of the 1,200 workers of these three gardens from the Humanitarian Assistance Programme section of the Disaster Management Department.
