The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has submitted a charge sheet against seven alleged drug dealers in connection with the murder of Dhaka University Chhatra Dal leader SM Shahriar Alam Samya.
The charge sheet was filed at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday evening (6 November) by DB Inspector Md Akhter Morshed, the investigating officer of the case—nearly five months after the brutal killing.
Confirming the submission of the charge sheet on Friday, the investigating officer said all seven accused were involved in drug trading and have already been arrested.
The accused are: Mehedi Hasan, Md Rabbi alias “Kobutor Rabbi,” Md Ripon alias “Akash,” Nahid Hasan Papel, Md Hridoy Islam, Md Harunur Rashid Sohag alias “Lambu Sohag,” and Md Robin.
According to the investigation report, Samya was stabbed to death inside Suhrawardy Udyan after he forbade the accused from selling marijuana there.
The DB also recommended exemption for four individuals—Tamim Hawlader, Samrat Mallik, Palash Sardar, and Sujon Sarker—who were initially arrested and remanded but later found not to be involved in the crime.
The incident took place around 11:30 pm on 13 May, when Samya was riding a motorcycle through Suhrawardy Udyan. He was attacked and stabbed by the assailants. His friends rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
The victim, SM Shahriar Alam Samya, was a student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at Dhaka University from the 2018–19 session and served as the literary and publication secretary of the AF Rahman Hall unit of Chhatra Dal.
Following the incident, Samya’s elder brother Shariful Islam filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station the next day.
