Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detective branch (DB) chief Rezaul Karim Mullick has been removed from his post and attached to the DMP headquarters.

An order of the office of DMP commissioner said this on Saturday. DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjad Ali signed the order.

The office order said Rezaul Karim Mullick will remain posted at the headquarters for administrative necessities until the next order. The order will come into effect immediately, it added.

Recently, Meghna Alam, the winner of Miss Earth Bangladesh, was detained by the Detective Branch from her residence in Dhaka on April 7. On the night of April 10, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka issued a 30-day detention order against her under the Special Powers Act of 1974.

The DB came under criticism following Meghna’s arrest. Subsequently, on April 11, the DMP issued an explanation regarding the incident.

According to the explanation, Meghna Alam was taken into security custody following all legal procedures, on allegations of involvement in a conspiracy to undermine national security, spread false information about prominent individuals to harm inter-state relations, and cause economic damage to the country. The DMP also stated that the allegation of her abduction was inaccurate.
However, she retains the right to seek legal recourse.

Earlier, the position of DB chief remained vacant for nearly a month after August 5 last year. Later on September 1, Rezaul Karim was appointed as DB chief through an official order signed by then DMP Commissioner Md Moinul Hasan.

An officer of the 17th BCS (Police) batch, Rezaul Karim joined the Bangladesh Police in 1998. He previously served in various units, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
