The government has announced a significant increase in the daily wages for temporary workers employed in public sector offices, with rates rising by up to Tk 225 per day starting July 1, 2025.
According to a circular issued by the Regulation Wing of the Ministry of Finance on Thursday, the revised wage structure applies to workers hired on a daily basis for urgent tasks across ministries, divisions, government offices, state-owned enterprises, and autonomous bodies.
The changes have been introduced under the new “Daily-Based Temporary Workers Employment Policy, 2025.”
Under the updated rates, workers in Dhaka and Chattogram City Corporation areas will earn Tk 800 per day, up from the current Tk 575-Tk 600 range.
In other city corporation and divisional town areas, the wage has been set at Tk 750, compared to the previous range of Tk 550-Tk 600.
In district and Upazila-level areas, both regular skilled and irregular unskilled workers will now receive Tk 700 per day. Previously, skilled workers earned Tk 550, while unskilled workers earned Tk 500. The adjustments represent a daily increase of Tk 150-Tk 200 across all categories.
The circular also outlines specific conditions for employing and compensating temporary workers. Appointments must adhere strictly to the Daily-Based Temporary Workers Employment Policy, ensuring proper working conditions and administrative approval. The number of workers and related expenses must be covered within the allocated budget of the respective ministry, division, or agency.
Importantly, the new wage structure does not apply to monthly workers. Any violation of the payment guidelines will hold the disbursing authority accountable, with strict adherence required to prevailing financial rules and regulations.
The government’s move is expected to enhance labour welfare and improve the quality of services provided through temporary public sector employment, particularly in infrastructure maintenance and short-term civic projects.
