As per a report published in this newspaper on Monday, the streets of Dhaka have become a battleground for discontent since the interim government took office, with protests erupting across the city and beyond.

While the right to protest is a cornerstone of democracy, the current wave of demonstrations has led to severe disruptions in daily life, leaving ordinary citizens frustrated and helpless in the face of relentless traffic chaos.

Since the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August, public order has deteriorated alarmingly.

The absence of traffic police and the blocking of major highways have compounded the challenges faced by commuters, emergency services, and businesses.

Reports indicate that in just 28 days, Dhaka has witnessed 16 major roadblocks, with citizens now bracing for hours-long delays as they navigate their daily routines.

The protests, driven by various groups including students, former police officers, and victims of past uprisings, reflect deep-seated grievances.

However, the increasing frequency of these demonstrations raises concerns about potential exploitation by vested interests seeking to manipulate public sentiment for personal gain.

Authorities must investigate these claims to ensure that genuine voices are not drowned out by opportunistic agendas.

The government’s response has been to issue bans on gatherings near key locations, yet protesters have largely ignored these directives, highlighting a growing disconnect between the authorities and the populace.

The dismissal of demands by education adviser Dr Wahid Uddin Mahmud, who suggested merging colleges rather than upgrading them, further fuels discontent among students who feel their aspirations are being overlooked.

As the situation escalates, it is imperative for the interim government to engage in meaningful dialogue with protest leaders and affected communities.

A failure to address the underlying issues will only exacerbate tensions and prolong the unrest.

In a nation yearning for stability and progress, it is crucial that all parties come together to seek common ground.

The path forward must prioritise dialogue over division, ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and respected.

Only through collaboration can Dhaka hope to emerge from this crisis and pave the way for a more harmonious future.
