A curfew has been declared in Gopalganj, effective from 8:00pm on Wednesday, July 16, until 6:00pm on Thursday, July 17, following a day of violent clashes in the district town.
The announcement was made by Foyez Ahammed, Senior Assistant Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, on Wednesday evening.
The decision comes in response to escalating unrest sparked by attacks on a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally and convoy, allegedly by supporters of the banned Awami League, and its affiliates Chhatra League and Juba League.
The violence, which included vandalism, arson, and assaults on NCP leaders, police, and journalists, turned areas like Municipal Park and Launch Ghat into battlegrounds.
Authorities, including police and army units, struggled to restore order, prompting the curfew to ensure public safety.
Earlier, the Gopalganj district administration had imposed Section 144 over the district town to quell violence.
