The Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) has condemned the incident of assaulting two journalists by the police while performing their professional duties in front of Chittagong College in the city and demanded punitive action against the responsible police.
In a statement sent to the media on Thursday (May 9), CUJ President Tapan Chakraborty and General Secretary M. Shamsul Islam said, Dhaka Tribune reporter Pimple Barua and Chittagong Prithidin reporter Biswajit Sharma were collecting news of the clash between two rival groups in Chittagong College Gate area on Thursday afternoon.
At that time, some policemen led by an assistant sub-inspector of police assaulted them. Even after the two journalists introduced themselves, the police harassed and ill-treated them.
Cuj leaders expressed concern over the incident and said that this incident of insulting journalists by the police while performing their professional duties is very heinous and sad.The leaders urged the CMP Commissioner to immediately take disciplinary action against the responsible policemen within the next 24 hours.
