Chattogram Bureau :
Chattogram University (CU) has conferred an honorary Doctor of Literature (D-Litt) degree on Nobel laureate and Chief Adviser of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fields of economics and social development.
The degree was officially awarded by CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Yahya Akhtar during the university’s 5th convocation ceremony, held on Wednesday (May 14) at the university’s central playground.
Dr. Yunus, who began his academic career at Chattogram University in 1972 as a faculty member in the Department of Economics, was warmly welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor, members of the syndicate, and faculty members upon his arrival around 2:00 PM. His return to the institution where he spent nearly a decade teaching marked a moment of pride for the university community.
He was accompanied by four advisors of the interim government-Professor Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Faruk-e-Azam, Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, and Nurjahan Begum-as well as University Grants Commission Chairman Professor S.M.A. Faiz.
The convocation, said to be the largest in the country’s history, saw the participation of around 23,000 graduates.
It included students who completed their Honours and Masters degrees between 2011 and 2023, and MPhil and PhD degrees between 2014 and 2024.
University officials described the event as a landmark moment in CU’s academic journey, highlighting Dr. Yunus’s lifelong dedication to poverty alleviation and social entrepreneurship through microfinance and the Grameen Bank model, which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.
