Police have recaptured Farhad Hossain Rubel, a prisoner who escaped from Chattogram Central Jail. He was arrested from the Ballakandi Char area of Raipura police station in Narsingdi around 12:30 pm on Tuesday.
Chattogram Metropolitan police AC (Kotwali) Nobel Chakma confirmed the information. Rubel, son of Sukkur Ali Bhandari of Mirerkandi area of Raipura upazila of Narsingdi, an accused on a murder case who landed in Chattogram prison’s ‘Punishment’ ward.
“Rubel was arrested from the Ballakandi Char area in a raid based on secret information. He is being taken to Chattogram,” AC Nobel Chakma said. According to jail sources, Sadarghat police arrested Rubel from the Mistripara area in Double Mooring police station in the city on February 8 in a murder case. He was then sent to jail through the court.
Rubel’s absence came to the attention of prison authorities during a roll-call of the detainees on Saturday morning. After the incident, Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan, senior jail superintendent of the prison, first filed a GD and later a case with the Kotwali Police Station.
Later on Sunday, Jailer Rafiqul Islam was withdrawn and two jail guards were suspended. At the same time, a three-member probe committee was formed led by the DIG of Khulna Range. The committee was asked to report within seven working days. Besides, another three-member committee was formed – under the direction of the DC – led by Additional District Magistrate of Chattogram.
“Rubel fleed from the ground floor of the Karnaphuli building through a boundary wall of a four-story building under construction next to the execution stage,” said Chagir Mia, head of the committee and DIG (Prison) of Khulna Division, on Monday night.
He said the information was obtained after observing multiple CCTV footage of the prison cell.
He added that Rubel’s prison escape was initially confirmed, however, it is being investigated whether anyone has assisted him in this work.
