Chattogram Port has recorded a significant increase in container handling for both imports and exports last month compared to the same period in 2024. Imports grew by 12.75pc, while exports saw a 13.84pc rise.
According to data from the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA), total export container handling in January 2025 reached 1,28,383 TEUs, including 75,234 TEUs of export cargo containers and 53,149 TEUs of empty export containers. In comparison, January 2024 saw 112,773 TEUs of export containers, with 63,634 TEUs of cargo containers and 49,139 TEUs of empty containers.
This reflects an increase of 15,610 TEUs in export containers, marking a 13.84pc growth, with 11,600 more TEUs of export cargo containers handled in January 2025.
Import handling also saw a notable rise. In January 2025, the port handled 135,231 TEUs of import containers, comprising 124,399 TEUs of cargo containers and 11,192 TEUs of empty containers. In January 2024, total import handling stood at 119,936 TEUs, with 112,095 TEUs of cargo containers and 7,841 TEUs of empty containers.
This represents an increase of 15,295 TEUs in total import containers, indicating a 12.75pc growth. Notably, cargo container (laden container) handling rose by 11,944 TEUs during this period.
Overall, Chattogram Port handled 32,75,627 TEUs in 2024, up from 30,50,793 TEUs in 2023 and 3,142,504 TEUs in 2022.
Md Omar Faruk, Secretary of the Chattogram Port Authority, said, “Business has started to return to normal after overcoming various global crises. As a result, import and export activities have increased, leading to higher container handling.”
