Chattogram Bureau:

The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) has expanded container storage capacity at the country’s main seaport by 10percent, increasing yard space from 53,518 TEUs to 59,000 TEUs.

CPA Secretary Md Omar Faruk said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to make the port more business-friendly and to ensure smoother trade operations.

“With the added capacity, congestion will no longer be an issue. Operational efficiency and service indicators have also improved in recent months,” he told media.

The expansion included new yards and renovations at the former auction yard, car storage area, baggage shed and X-Y Shed. The CPA also plans to raise capacity further to around 62,000 TEUs by the end of this year.

Currently, the port can smoothly handle 47,000-48,000 TEUs in storage. Daily container ship handling has increased from 10 vessels to 12-13, helping shorten delivery times for imports and exports and reducing export lead times. Improved yard space has also allowed pre-stacking of about 6,000 export-bound TEUs
