BSS, Chittagong :
With Eid-ul-Fitr fast approaching, the port city has already been caught under the grip of ‘Eid shopping fever’ as all shopping centres are bustling with shoppers from all walks of life.
Shop owners told BSS that sales were showing an upward trend during last couple of days as people especially private and public service holders have already received their salaries and Eid bonuses.
Businessmen, market association leaders and shoppers highly appreciated the government steps for creating conducive trade atmosphere during Ramadan and Eid festivity and said they have been doing good business in a safe and secure environment.
Deployment of police personnel in different strategic city-points and market places, intensive surveillance by RAB personnel and engagement of private security men at shopping malls by the concerned authorities have ultimately created a full-proof security arrangement for businessmen as well as shoppers.
“We are doing good business this year as people seem to be relieved from sense of insecurity. Even as a businessman, I have not faced any untoward situation relating to law and order from the first day of Ramadan,” Golam Mostafa, General Secretary of Sholoshahar Shopping Complex Businessmen Association told BSS.
He said people with their family members are coming for shopping even at mid-night due to improved law and order situation.
Shop owners said local products particularly three-pieces for girls, shoes, Sarees with embroidery and stone work, Panjabees, shirts and trousers produced by different local fashion houses are the main centre of attraction to the customers.
According to importers and wholesalers, Sarees and cosmetics from India are still dominating the country’s Eid market while shoes, trousers, toys, readymade garments and electronic items from China, Taiwan and Thailand have occupied a good place in the market.
CMP traffic department sources said, the port city has been witnessing heavy traffic congestion from mid Ramadan particularly after office hour till Iftar at New Market, Reazuddin Bazar, Jubilee Road, Station road, Andarkilla, Chawkbazar, GEC Crossing, Sholoshahar, Nasirabad, Agradab, Dewanhat and Bahaddarhat following heavy gush of buyers.
Traffic police were seen struggling to tackle the situations in those points.
While talking to BSS, most of the shop owners in Shopping Complex, New Market, Amin Center, Mimi Super Market, Reazuddin Bazar , Central Plaza, Moti Tower, Lucky Plaza , Singapore Market and traditional Zahur Hawkers Market in the city said they were happy so far with the sale of their products.
“We really feel comfort and enjoy the pleasure to be part of Eid shopping spree as miscreants seem to be driven out”, Jesmin Akter, a shopper at New Market said.
